Craven's Nightmare Trilogy???

Arrow in the Head interviewed Wes Craven recently, he had this to say regarding the Nightmare series:

There have been some rumors that you might want to direct a third NIGHTMARE film, perhaps attempting to create a pure trilogy within the franchise. Any truth to that, if for instance NewLine came to you and said "Let’s do it," or is that pure fan fantasy?

That's something that I'd be interested in doing, but the curious thing to me about the question is that I've done multiple interviews today and that's the first I've heard of that notion. The idea of me turning it into a trilogy. There's been no discussion between me and the studio about that.

Have you thought at all about what you would do with a third NIGHTMARE film?

No, I haven't. Because to spend time thinking about a film that you have no reason to believe will be made is kind of a waste of time. I'm working on a script of my own, and to me it's always better to work on something that's attached to the future. Something that's brand new, and something that I can control more, ultimately keeping ownership.

Robert Englund Talks 'Nightmare' Scenarios

Iconic horror actor discusses sequel, prequel possibilities.

Since 1984, we've seen Freddy Krueger hit the big screen eight times. He's fought everyone from sleep-deprived teens and their vengeful parents to dream warriors to his most formidable foe, Jason Voorhees. So who else could the iconic slasher possibly have left to fight? Maybe Slim Shady?

"That would be a good throw-down, huh? If they ever get him out of divorce court," Englund joked last week about a dream battle between Eminem and Freddy Krueger.

On the serious tip, the 59-year-old actor — who says he's actually a big fan of Em and Jay-Z, as well as the Arcade Fire and Hard-Fi — revealed that, in reality, there really isn't much demand to resurrect his most popular character. Krueger last made it to the theaters in 2003's "Freddy vs. Jason," which ended with Voorhees carrying Krueger's severed head under his arm. The decapitated Freddy still managed to wink.

"We were going to do it with Ash from the 'Evil Dead' movies," Englund said about a sequel to "Freddy vs. Jason." "['Evil Dead' director] Sam Raimi, now that he has all his 'Spider-Man' movies and all that money, I'm sure he's going to remake 'Evil Dead.' I think that's what him and ['Evil Dead' star] Bruce Campbell wanna do. But I've heard [the movie studio] is in talks with John Carpenter [director of the original 'Halloween']. So maybe Freddy and Jason are going to meet up with Michael Myers. I also hear they have a really good prequel script to 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' being passed around. And there was talk that John McNaughton, director of 'Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer,' was attached. Which means that maybe they would be making a prequel to the original 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' with me out of the makeup for a while. You get to see Freddy Krueger, the early crimes. Freddy Krueger, the early years."

Englund says he doesn't have any input on the "Nightmare" movies until he signs on to act in them. Even then, his input is not as major as you would think — though he cites the famous Freddy line "Welcome to prime time, bitch!" as his brainchild. He mostly lets the director and writer handle the duties of the script.

"Sometimes we've made mistakes," Englund said. "We [portrayed] Freddy too funny or we've taken out of the dream. We've made mistakes, but I sort of have a sixth sense now. I have a radar for what Freddy would or would not do. If they did a prequel where Freddy gets caught, they should do it like a 'Law & Order' episode. Whoever plays the lawyers — Freddy's lawyers — those would be really great roles. Something like James Woods on 'Shark.' ... The audience is going to know that Freddy goes on to kill another hundred more people. I like the idea of getting some hot, interesting actors to play the Freddy lawyers."

Englund isn't so excited about the prospect of having another actor play Freddy, however. There's been talk about redoing "Friday the 13th," given the fact that over-the-top serial killers Leatherface and Michael Myers have gotten Hollywood makeovers recently.

"Sooner or later, somebody else is going to have to play the part," Englund admitted. "But I can still do Freddy in the makeup. All I gotta do is lose 5 pounds. Nobody moves like me or talks like me. Sooner or later, I'll have to pass the baton. I don't know if they'll remake the first one, because that's sort of considered the classic and the scariest. I'm a big fan of Wes Craven's 'New Nightmare.' Even though part one and part three are the fans' favorites, I can still see where we were running out of money on the budget for those films. We had a really low budget, so maybe [the first one] deserves to be remade. The remake of 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre,' I really like it. 'The Hills Have Eyes' remake really worked on me.

"These young directors are doing some great work," he added. "I have some new movies coming out, 'Heartstopper' and 'Hatchet,' and 'Behind the Mask' [is] out now. These young directors are keeping me young and keeping me on my toes. I think a redo of 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' will be successful, but I think they need to wait awhile. I would like to see the prequel. Maybe I could work on that one. Dye my hair red and play Freddy as the janitor at the school going after kids."

"Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon" opened in theaters Friday, and in it, Englund actually plays a goodie. His character, Doc Halloran, is on the trail of a homicidal psycho who chooses to videotape his exploits in a documentary.

"It's got a little bit of 'Blair Witch' to it," Englund said. "A little bit of Wes Craven's 'Scream' ... a little bit of 'Spinal Tap.' It's got all of those things going [on in] it. Then it mutates and morphs into a full-blast horror movie in the end. So it's really scary too. With 'Behind the Mask,' the pressure's not so much on me. It's more so on the actor Nathan Baesel, because he's the serial killer in this. I've taken on the role sort of like Donald Pleasence in the 'Halloween' movies. I'm obsessed with finding the killer. I play this psychiatrist who treated him years ago and let him escape. So the pressure wasn't on. It's more fun for me to let the kids put the makeup on and let them go crazy.

"In 'Heartstopper,' I also play a good guy," he continued. "In 'Hatchet,' I play what is kinda referred to as the red herring, the guy that tries to fool you."

Expect to see "Hatchet" in theaters April 27 and "Heartstopper" on Halloween.

The Horror Collection has begun a new figure collection based on New Line Cinema’s "House of Horror" license. Current figures include Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Leatherface. A companion magazine is released with each figure, focusing on character background, behind-the-scenes details, interviews, and more. Their website promotes, "Come face to face with your worst nightmare, Freddy Krueger. Subsequent issues feature Freddy in his many gruesome guises, along with his sleep-deprived victims."

Wildstorm Updates Publishing Plans for Horror/Movie Titles

Starting in June, WildStorm's titles based on popular horror movies from New Line Cinema - A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, FRIDAY THE 13TH and TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - will change from monthly comics to a series of specials and miniseries.

"This new approach to these franchises should provide retailers with more opportunities to introduce them to new readers," says Hank Kanalz, VP - General Manager, WildStorm.

The first of the specials will be TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: CUT!, coming in June. Written by Will Pfeifer, with art by Stefano Raffaele and a cover by Darick Robertson, CUT! takes place thirty years after the gruesome events of the infamous "Texas Chainsaw Massacre," as film school grads come to Travis County to document the Hewitt clan. But has the terror really ended? Has Leatherface really faded into urban myth? TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: CUT! will be solicited in the April Previews.

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE comes to end as an ongoing series with issue #6 (FEB070342), scheduled to arrive in stores on April 18.

Also in June, the eighth and final issue of the ongoing A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET series will arrive in stores. WildStorm will continue publishing A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET, starting with a six-part mini-series scheduled for later this year.

FRIDAY THE 13TH comes to an end as an ongoing series with issue #6 (MAR070260), scheduled to arrive in stores on May 9. WildStorm will continue publishing FRIDAY THE 13TH, starting with a two-part Special, "Pamela's Tale" scheduled to begin in July.

Freddy's Nightmares returns to TV.

Chiller, an NBC Universal Cable channel, launched on March 1, 2007. Chiller is a new entertainment network dedicated to the popular horror genre and features exclusive horror and thriller programming from "Freddy's Nightmares - A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Series," "Tales From the Crypt" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" to "The Shining," "Psycho" and "The Haunting."

Chiller will offer a digital triple-pack service, which features a standard definition digital channel (SD), hi-definition simulcast channel (HD), and a video-on-demand (VOD) channel offered as a digital bundle. The SD digital channel is currently available. The VOD and HD offerings will be available later in 2007.

The first episode of Freddy's Nightmares: No More Mr. Nice Guy aired tonight! See Chiller's website for show times.

The American Film Institute (AFI) revealed the top 50 heroes and top 50 villains of all time in AFI's 100 Years… 100 Heroes & Villains. This is an amazing compliment for the character.

“The picture with Robert Englund is at the FX Show Convention in Orlando, FL. last January. Robert Englund is a truly great actor and person. The picture has me Will Sanders and my son Jakob. We are really big fans of Nightmare, as well as the horror genre.

I am a theater manager that devotes my whole life to films, and last September we got an email from New Line stating that the original Nightmare on Elm Street would be showing in Sarasota for two nights only. It is about 60 miles from where we live, but was well worth the trip to see the original. We got my Freddy Glove out and my wife Harmoni, my son Jakob and I took off for the show. It was great! Everyone clapped and applauded as the lights lowered and as the title came up. We all clapped when we saw introducing Johnny Depp and Robert Englund’s name on the screen. Seeing the film the big screen was just as scary as renting it when I was a kid. The collection of Freddy Kills was also great.

I just wanted to share our experience with fellow fans.”

Fango reports on the rumored prequel.

From Fangoria: Director John (HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER) McNaughton’s name has been attached to a NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET prequel for quite some time now (we first reported on it here), but no news has been heard about the project for months. So Fango asked McNaughton (whose MASTERS OF HORROR entry HAECKEL’S TALE, pictured, hits DVD November 14 from Anchor Bay) what was up. “Well, [New Line and I] talked about it, and I’m still waiting to hear back from them,” he says. “They approached me because of HENRY, since they want to make a serious film about Freddy Krueger and his early days as a school janitor. Freddy’s just a living person at that point, and this would seem more like a real story. It wouldn’t be supernatural, and it will recount the days when he used to kidnap young girls—and actually also boys—to rape and murder them.”

While both McNaughton and New Line seem to have a pretty good idea of what they want from the film, a script still has yet to be written. “This process obviously takes a long time and there’s no actual screenplay yet, just an idea of what the movie should be about. Let’s say I haven’t recieved the check yet,” the director laughs. “However, I do have a writer in mind whom I would like to write the new NIGHTMARE: His name is R.J. Tsarov, and he wrote the stage play I just directed. He’s a true talent and has a very original vision.”

The Wildstorm hits this Wednesday.

...later this Fall NECA will release a limited edition Cult Classics Series entitled Hall of Fame. This collection will be produced in limited quantities and is comprised of characters that were previously only available in deluxe boxed sets or in some cases we have sculpted new pieces to make some of the figures different from versions previously released. New Nightmare Freddy will be the shortpacked figure as he was previously part of Cult Classics Series 2. The difference here is the inclusion of the demon head from the end of New Nightmare. We sculpted this for the 18" version of NN Freddy and loved it so much we wish we had thought of including it back with the original carded release. This is a chance to do that.

Just in time for Halloween, this October Wildstorm will go in a different direction for the publisher and try to haunt your nightmares as they bring back the iconic Freddy Krueger in a new comic book series based on the Nightmare on Elm Street films, right on the heels of a new DVD Special Edition.

October’s A Nightmare On Elm Street #1 is written by veteran Chuck Dixon, penciled by Kevin West, and features covers by Tony Harris, Jim Clark and JD Mettler (as seen here), along with an incentive variant by Tim Bradstreet. According to editor Ben Abernathy, the Wildstorm series will begin with a six-issue arc, composed of two smaller three-issue arcs.

“A new family has moved to Springwood, not aware of the Freddy menace...but they're about to get schooled by the urban legend in a big way!” described Abernathy. “But the real question is - does a former Special Forces Ranger, trained in sleep deprivation and Zen techniques, stand a chance against the this evil master of dreams?”

“It’s an entry level story that’s serves to re-intro Freddy and the core premise of the series,” added Dixon, asked for his description of the series. “The initial story is very much a return to Freddy Krueger of the first movies. This guy is scary rather than a one-liner king. Freddy’s War deals with a dad who’s not going to take Kruger’s assaults lying down. Strike that, okay? He actually is lying down when he enters the nightmare world and challenges Freddy on his own turf with some shock and awe of his own.”

“I’m not a fan of the typical ‘masked guy chases naked teens through the woods’ slasher genre,” continued Dixon, asked if he has been a fan of Freddy Krueger or horror in general. “But I’ve always gotten a kick out of the Nightmare movies. I like the whole aspect of playing with reality and the tension that grows when the sleeping and waking worlds begin to merge. It’s a richer, more intelligent franchise and Freddy is a terrific adversary. His victims are also smarter and more resourceful so it’s more of a battle of wits than other stories of this stripe. I think I surprised Wildstorm with my enthusiasm when they offered this.”

"A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most terrifying films ever made and Freddy Krueger is hands-down the most iconic horror film character ever,” concluded Abernathy. “Our mission with this series - to scare the pants of you!”

At a time when horror films are enjoying a resurgence of popularity, New Line Home Entertainment is going into its vault to bring to DVD one of the most notorious horror movies ever made. The original 1984 A Nightmare on Elm Street, which spawned eight feature films, a TV series and a new wave of teen slasher movies, is being prepped for a special-edition DVD release Sept. 26 as part of the studio’s premier Infinifilm line. Using the Infinifilm option, viewers can access behind-the-scenes documentaries, interviews and other extras as they are watching the film, so the bonus materials can be digested in context. Among the bonus features New Line is preparing are audio essays with director Wes Craven and star Robert Englund; documentaries on the franchise’s origins and its legacy; a trivia challenge; and a making-of feature. “Many DVD features that are now considered the standards of the home entertainment experience were born at New Line, and we continue to push the envelope,” said Stephen Einhorn, president and COO of New Line Home Entertainment. Freddy had a brief mention in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly (issue: #880/881, page 18). EW (while promoting the SAW series) states the following about the SAW killer Jigsaw: " Jigsaw, the film’s villian, has the potential to become this decade’s Freddy Krueger. Let’s just hope execs are Lionsgate learn from Krueger’s ill-advised foray into 3-D".

Jason also had a brief mention under the series’ that are "Falling": "Jason’s already gone to hell and to outer space. Why can’t he just go away?"

Avatar Press has announced the release of A Nightmare On Elm Street: Fearbook. This one-shot issue will be the concluding chapter to Brian Pulido’s storyline that began in the NOES Special from last year. The issue is slated for a June, 2006 release with six variant covers available to customers. A Trade Paperback release containing the NOES Special, NOES Paranoid mini-series, & NOES Fearbook is rumored to be in development.
